The Struggle with Screen time and Children

-Leighann Soto

Screentime and children have been a major concern in todays society! One of the main questions would be how much screen time should a child have between the ages of 2-13 ( I’m focusing on)

Introduction

I am personally writing about this topic from a parents point of view. I have two children an 8 year old son and a 3 year old son. How much time should a child be in front of a screen (e.g television, computer, I pad, phone etc). Kids and teens ages 8-18 years old spend an average of more than 7 hours a day looking at screens. The new warning from the AHA recommends parents limit screen time for their kids to a maximum of 2 hours per day. For younger kids ages 2-5, the limit is one hour per day.

In the video below you can see how some people view the screen time with our brains and on average how many times people pick up the phones? Sometimes you don’t notice how many times we look at the screen. They do a study to ask to keep looking down and then they also do a study with the child. It is incredible how much we depend on this technology. We are even guilty as adults on how many times we are on our phones which I also feel effects our children.

Some pediatricians might also say that being in front of the television for a long amount of time can effect the brain of a child. Statistics also prove that children are more socially awkward and lack certain social skills when all they do is sit in front of a screen all day. These children do not know how to interact with people and lack social skills terribly.
